چکیده

This paper is concerned with formal aspects of the logic of theory change, :and in particular with the process of shrinking or contracting a theory to eliminate a proposition. It continues work in the area by the authors and Peter Gi~rdenfors. The paper defines a notion of "safe contraction" of a set of propositions, shows that it satisfies the Gi~rdenfors postulates for contraction and thus can be represented as a partial meet contraction, and studies its properties both in general and under ~arious natural constraints.

Action Theory Evolution

Like any other logical theory, domain descriptions in reasoning about actions may evolve, and thus need revision methods to adequately accommodate new information about the behavior of actions. The present work is about changing action domain descriptions in propositional dynamic logic. Its contribution is threefold: first we revisit the semantics of action theory contraction that has been done...

Horn Clause Belief Change: Contraction Functions

The standard (AGM) approach to belief change assumes that the underlying logic is at least as strong as classical propositional logic. This paper investigates an account of belief change, specifically contraction, where the underlying logic is that governing Horn clauses. Thus this work sheds light on the theoretical underpinnings of belief change by weakening a fundamental assumption of the ar...

Semi-Contraction: Axioms and Construction

Semi-contraction is a withdrawal operation defined by Fermé in “On the logic of theory change: Contraction without recovery.” In this paper we propose: (1) an axiomatic characterization of semi-contraction; (2) an alternative construction for semi-contraction based on semi-saturatable sets, inspired by Levi’s saturatable sets; (3) a special kind of semi-contraction that satisfies the Lindström ...

Belief Contraction in the Description Logic EL

In this paper, we propose a service for contracting axioms from ontologies based on the description logic EL. In particular, we devise algorithms that implement the contraction operation of the AGM theory on belief change. We first generalise the AGM contraction postulates to description logics, in which a variant of the recovery postulate is defined by using the notion of logical difference. P...
